I have intentionally left out a few safari parks, even ones that I have visited because greater research showed that they weren’t accredited by one of those two widely recognized organizations. That said, I do think we need to be careful about which establishments we support, which is why I have included only the zoos and safari parks that are accredited members of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums or the Zoological Association of America. Although I know many have different views, I see many benefits of these safari and wildlife parks from seeing the simple joy on a child’s face when they see an animal in person that inspires a lifelong interest in animal preservation, to the important research that these parks provide in understanding animal behavior and saving them from extinction. I constantly struggle with the benefits of zoos versus the negative impacts of keeping animals in captivity. The nice thing about drive through safaris and zoos is that most have acres and acres of land for animals to roam in a much more natural setting. As traditional zoos have transitioned to animal conservation and education over entertainment, there has been a shift to larger, more natural animal habitats and enclosures. Because each individual’s stripes are unique, their stripes may also have a social purpose, helping zebras to recognize one other. After years of traveling around the United States, both with my family and without, I have run across many drive through zoos, safari parks, and wildlife preserves. Their stripes perhaps serve to dazzle and confuse predators and biting insects, or to control the animal’s body heat. Scientists aren’t entirely sure why Zebras have stripes. The plains zebra is the most common and has or had about six subspecies distributed across much of southern and eastern Africa. And their most famous feature-Their black and white stripe coats are unique to each individual and the pattern of their stripes varies between the species. Zebras have long necks and heads that mean they can easily reach the grass on the ground and a mane that extends from their forehead and along their back to the tail. The gameplay in Tropico is so complex I don’t even know where to start. When it comes to the graphical capabilities of the game, it’s not something special but it does what it is supposed to do, gives us the tone of the game. The sound design is also really mint and great for what it is, for each action done you get prompts, such as workers responding to your actions, or you hear seagulls near the docks, and hearing freighters departing or arriving at the docks, the small things that complete it, besides that, also when you get a plea from specific groups of people whether be capitalists, communists, or religious people, those prompts are fully voice-acted which is really nice, not something that was needed, but it is nice it was added. He believed that the best thing a philosopher could do was attach himself to a powerful person or family. Piering explains that Plato was aristocratic or at least in the thrall of the ruling class. So why would Plato suggest that Diogenes do the same? He not only fired Plato but sold him into slavery. The irony is that Plato did travel to Syracuse to take the difficult job of teaching moral philosophy to Dionysius, a hard-partying tyrant who wasn't receptive to Plato's message of moderation. If Diogenes sucked up to a powerful ruler, like Dionysius of Syracuse, then he'd have the means to live in a real house and not have to scrounge for food in the streets. So here he was, washing off some discarded lettuce in the market, when the great Plato deigned to give the lowly Diogenes some career advice. ![]() It really starts with the Cynics."īonus: "Someone took into a magnificent house and warned him not to expectorate, whereupon having cleared his throat he discharged the phlegm into the man's face, being unable, he said, to find a meaner receptacle." You don't see that in Socrates, Plato or Aristotle. "It's the first time in the history of Western philosophy that you get this really radical conception of freedom. "Diogenes makes it clear that he's the master in that relationship, not the person who bought him, just like he's more free than Alexander the Great," says Piering. Even as a slave, Diogenes was freer than his supposed master. ![]() He spotted a rich man in the crowd named Xeniades and said, "Sell me to this man he needs a master."Īgain, Diogenes used a witty exchange to say something about the nature of freedom. When the auctioneer asked Diogenes "in what he was proficient," according to Diogenes Laertius, the mischievous philosopher replied, "In ruling men." Kind of an odd thing for a slave to say, but Diogenes persisted. According to Diogenes Laertius, the mighty Alexander is reported to have said, "Had I not been Alexander, I should have liked to be Diogenes."īonus: "When someone was extolling the good fortune of Callisthenes and saying what splendour he shared in the suite of Alexander, 'Not so,' said Diogenes, 'but rather ill fortune for he breakfasts and dines when Alexander thinks fit.'" You might think that insulting an emperor would get you in trouble, but Diogenes enjoyed a strange type of immunity as a "comic" figure and even posh Athenians had a grudging respect for Diogenes' unencumbered freedom. ![]() "So not only does Diogenes not need anything from Alexander the Great, he doesn't want anything from him." "When you're indebted to a politician, a statesman, or even more so the emperor, you have lost your ability to speak freely and act freely," says Piering. And Diogenes knew that a "boon" from Alexander wasn't just a gift, but an attempt to buy his loyalty. But what we do know is that Cynics like Diogenes prized one thing above all else: autarkeia, a Greek word that roughly translates into autonomy or freedom. Here are five of the most memorable moments from the life of Diogenes of Sinope:ĭid Diogenes dislike Alexander? We don't know. For our purposes, we're going to quote directly from "Lives of Eminent Philosophers" even if the quotes or anecdotes about Diogenes are written in the third person. If you search the internet for Diogenes quotes, by the way, you'll find a lot of lines that were lifted from Diogenes Laertius and reworded as first-person quotes from Diogenes. In " Lives of Eminent Philosophers," the Greek historian Diogenes Laertius recorded the greatest comedic hits of Diogenes, including some truly sick burns directed at figures like Alexander the Great and Plato. Everything else was nonsense.ĭiogenes left no writing of his own and just about everything we know about him was written centuries later by another guy named Diogenes. Human nature and reason, to Cynics, were the only requirements for a happy life. But the Cynics lived this way to make a point - that there is nothing shameful about being human. They dressed in rough blankets, slept under porticos, and did every "shameful" human act in public. It's Diogenes who took the radicalized version of that."ĭiogenes and his Cynic followers were beggars. "He just said not to care about money or status or power more than you care about the state of your soul. "But Socrates never said to give up all of your possessions," says Piering. ![]() ![]() ![]() When using numbing cream, IELT times increase from just over a minute to over eight minutes. ![]() ![]() The primary advantage of penis numbing cream is the fact that the product does appear to be effective.Ī 2004 study of 42 men showed a substantial increase in intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) with the use of penis numbing cream made with lidocaine and prilocaine.
